OUR OPINION

A traditional log cabin in a peaceful countryside location near plenty of attractions for all those interested in culture, nature and wildlife. Beautiful lake views can be admired from the large windows facing the lake. An ideal choice for romantic getaways for couples.

     Lak001 - Woodland Log Cabin
This log cabin is ideal for a couple, but can sleep up to 5 people. The cabin has a g
ood standard of amenities, an open plan kitchen and dining area, lounge, sauna, shower, wood burning fireplace and a double bedroom. Additional three people can be accommodated on sofa beds in lounge if required.

The cabin is located in an idyllic countryside setting overlooking Juojärvi Lake, where swans rest on their way to north in the springtime. The cabin owners grow a number of different types of berries including strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and currents, that can be picked for a small charge. A canoe can be borrowed from the owners, while bicycles (2) can be hired for a small charge.

In winter, a horse and sleigh ride through the surrounding fields and woodland is included in the rental price, while a Christmas tree and a visit from Santa are included in all bookings over the Christmas period. Toboggans and snowshoes are also available.

Country breakfast service is available by prior booking May-September at the cabin owners' sun room nearby for max. 4 people for an additional charge.

Cabin amenities:
Wood burning sauna, shower, WC, fireplace and logs, microwave, electric oven and hobs, TV, radio, electric heating, coffee maker, rowing boat, hoover, iron, fridge/freezer, car heating point and an outdoor  barbecue area. A baby bed can be arranged by prior booking.

Pets are allowed, but smoking is not. Bed linen and towels can be rented for £10 per person. Final cleaning in the cabin can be arranged on your behalf for £19.

Location:
The cabin is located 15km from Outokumpu and 60km from Joensuu Airport. All local amenities are a short drive away and a mobile food shop makes a stop nearby once a week. The nearest lake just 100m away is ideal for swimming in summer and as the shore is shallow, even the youngest children can enjoy it. The helpful owners live just 50m away if you happen to need any assistance.

Outokumpu town has a small variety of shops and restaurants, while the larger Joensuu about 45km away provides an excellent day trip destination with its beautiful harbour, bustling market place and a variety of department stores, restaurants, cafes and bars.

For culture and religion, visit the fascinating Valamo Monastery in Heinävesi just a short drive away. The Monastery is the centre of Orthodox religion and worship in Finland and a visit there offers you a rare insight into the daily life of the resident monks.

If you are interested in nature and wildlife, make a trip to the bird towers of Sysmäjärvi Lake, one of the top ten bird-watching lakes in Finland, or rent a canoe and follow the popular canoeing trail through 12 small lakes. For golf, head for the 9-hole Keretti Golf Course 15km away.

Kolovesi National Park 65km away is a 23km² area of lakes, woods and rock walls reaching as high as 40m. The park was formed during the last ice age and you can still spot signs of life from the stone ages. The park today is inhabited by endangered Saimaa seals, trekkers and canoeists.

Maarianvaara Ski Resort 35km away is fairly small and therefore ideal for beginners and families. All skiing and snowboarding equipment can be hired from the rental shop, while a cafe/restaurant serves food for the hungry. Cross-country skiing (30km) and snowmobiling are also available.

How do I get there?
Fly on Finnair from London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh or Dublin to Joensuu (60km from cabin) or Kuopio (100km) via Helsinki. Pick up a hire car at the airport.
