- Hollow Birch Cabin The cabin surrounds are peaceful and the area offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities. Enjoy swimming, rowing your own boat, walking along the country lanes or go fishing, picking wild berries and mushrooms or try orienteering. Tennis and beach volleyball courts are in your use free of charge and golf is available on two courses within an 80km radius. In winter, learn to drive a snowmobile or rent your own for €130-150 per day, including all necessary equipment and protective clothing. Location: The cabin is located just 20m from a sandy beach and a shallow lake shore, that is ideal for swimming for all ages. The nearest neighbour is located 35m away. The whole family will love a visit to Kitee Animal Park 13km away. The park has a wide variety of native Finnish wildlife, including brown bears, moose and lynxes (open daily 15.4-31.10). If shopping is more your cup of tea however, visit the Marimekko factory outlet for discounted fabrics and other products direct from this world famous Finnish brand, known particularly for its unique colourful flower designs. Punkaharju Ridge, famous for its extraordinary landscape, comprising a fascinating myriad of islands and lakes, is located 70km away and provides an excellent day trip destination. Enjoy driving through the breathtakingly beautiful scenery and stop to visit the unique Retretti Art Centre that houses art in different forms in galleries located partly underground (open daily 1.6-27.8.06). Kesämaa Water and Adventure Park next door has water slides, bouncy castles and fun boast for children of all ages (open daily 5.6-12.8.06). Joensuu about 80km away has beautiful harbour, bustling market place and a wide variety of department stores, restaurants, cafes and bars. Joensuu also has an interesting Orthodox church and a few good art museums, where you can admire the work of mainly Finnish artists. Make a visit also to Savonlinna (80km) and its magnificent medieval Olavinlinna Castle, famous for hosting the annual International Opera Festival. The castle is surrounded by water and you walk inside along a pier, that is periodically opened for passing cruise ships.
