- Aurora Cabin The cabin has an open plan kitchen and dining area, lovely sitting area with a beautiful wood burning fireplace, sauna, shower room, 2 WCs, two twin bedrooms and an additional mezzanine upstairs that has two single beds and two single mattresses. Cross-country ski tracks can be accessed directly outside the cabin and there is a separate shared room for waxing skis in the cabin area. The location is magical in winter when Arctic hares can be seen playing in the snow through the cabin windows and there is a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights. In the summer, you can enjoy a drink in the midnight sun on the back terrace, whilst watching reindeer in the forest. Cabin
amenities:
Pets and smoking are not allowed. Bed linen and towels can be hired for £15 per person, while final clean is complimentary and will be done on your behalf free of charge. Location: Airport Bus meets all Finnair and Blue1 flights arriving in Kittilä and operates between the airport and Äkäslompolo village from December to April. Night trains from Helsinki and Tampere arrive in Kolari with a bus connection to Äkäslompolo. The ski slopes of Ylläs are located about 3km from the cabin and can be accessed easily on a ski bus, that you can catch from a bus stop near the cabin (10 minute walk). The ski centre has 43 varied ski slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding and the runs are the longest in Finland. Apart from skiing, Yllas also offers excellent possibilities for snowshoe trekking, ice-fishing, snowmobiling adventures, reindeer and husky safaris and meeting Santa Claus. Snow Village in neighbouring Ylläsjärvi about 10km away features magnificent snow art, sculptures and the world's largest igloo. Don't miss wandering in the ice maze before heading for a warming meal in the restaurant or a quick drink in the Ice Bar. The Snow Village is usually open daily during the winter season from 1st of December onwards. As Akaslompolo village is centred around a beautiful lake, summers in the village are pretty special as well. Boating, fishing and swimming are particularly popular activities, but horse riding and walking are also recommended. Ylläs-Aakenus Conservation Area 15km away forms part of the Pallas-Ylläs Fells National Park. The 380km² area consists of clear lakes, dense woods, swamps and wild fells. Hike along the hundreds of kilometres of clearly marked trails or simply enjoy bird watching, fishing or picking blueberries, lingonberries and cloudberries. If you prefer to explore the area in a hire car, do not miss driving along the scenic Fell Road (Tunturitie), that starts from Äkäslompolo village and takes you through the extraordinary scenery of fells and lakes all the way to the Pallas Fells and onwards along Ounas River to Enontekiö (Hetta).
