- Cat's Whiskers Cottage The cabin is located in the serene countryside and the surrounds are peaceful and ideal for resting, walking, swimming, rowing a boat and cycling. Bicycles can be hired from the cabin owners. The cabin is conveniently located within an easy driving distance from Tampere and Hämeenlinna, both of which offer a wide range of shopping, culture, history and family attractions, while Helsinki and Turku are also just 1.5 hour's drive away. amenities: A rowing boat and a wood storage are shared with another cabin next door, while the cabin also includes a pretty barbeque hut, ideal for grilling sausages in a true Finnish fashion. Pets and smoking are not allowed. Bed linen and towels can be rented for £10 per person. Final cleaning in the cabin can be arranged on your behalf for £63. Location: Torronsuo National Park is a 27km² area, that consists of mainly swamps, woods and rocks. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the 4km nature trail, visit the park visitor centre or pick wild cloudberries, cranberries and bilberries in late summer or autumn. The park is ideal for bird-watching, as willow grouses, geese, cranes and plenty of other species are regularly spotted throughout the area, particularly in spring and autumn, when they rest in the area on their way to north or south. Tampere 70km away is the third largest town in Finland and boasts a number of good restaurants, bars, department stores and interesting attractions for the whole family. Särkänniemi, the second largest adventure park in Finland, is also located here. Hämeenlinna nearby offers an ideal day trip with a number of shops, restaurants, art and history museums and a fantastic medieval Häme Castle, where you can join a tour in English (hourly from May to mid-August, by prior booking at all other times). In Hämeenlinna you can also visit the first home of Jean Sibelius, the famous Finnish composer, who spent his childhood in the town. Iittala village just north of Hämeenlinna is the home to the famous Finnish glass. Visit the pleasant museum and the excellent shop where you can bag a bargain choosing from beautiful functional glassware and decorative pieces from the stylish Iittala range. The nearest ski resort is Sveitsi in Hyvinkää, 90km away. The resort has toboggan hills for children and 4 ski slopes for downhill skiing, while cross-country skiing tracks are available in the Sveitsi National Park next door.
