OUR OPINION

These cabins have all necessary amenities and pretty, homely Scandinavian interiors. The cabin village atmosphere is ideal, if you wish to mix with other people and try lots of different outdoor activities offered. The cabins are recommended for couples, who do not require much space, but prefer to have all modern comforts handy.

   Sou011 & 018 - Birchtree Cabins
These cosy cabins ideal for couples are located on an island, although you will be able to drive all the way to your cabin via a narrow road that crosses the lake. The cabins are located in a very pretty holiday village that has 8 cabins in total. Some of the cabins are located directly by the water, while others are located in the woods a little further from the water's edge.

Birchtree Cabins have a small kitchen and an open plan dining and sitting area, sauna, shower, wood burning fireplace and an attic bedroom with mattresses for two.

The main blue-coloured timber reception building, that dates from the early 1900's, also houses a restaurant, where you can dine, if you do not wish to cook for yourself every day. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner by prior booking, though small meals and snacks are available at any time. The village also has its own chapel, that was built in 1758.

The village offers natural surrounds that are ideal for outdoor activities such as fishing, swimming, mini golf, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, tobogganing, snowmobiling and canoeing. Wild berries and mushrooms can be picked from the woods surrounding the cabins and village pets such as rabbits, sheep, dogs, horses and a cat are also around for cuddling.

At Christmas time, the rental price includes a Christmas tree, while an atmospheric service will be held in the chapel on Christmas Eve. The New Year celebrations in the village include fireworks at midnight.

Cabin amenities:
Electric sauna, shower, WC, fireplace and logs, microwave, electric hobs, TV, electric heating, coffee maker, teapot, kettle, toaster, rowing boat, small verandah, fridge/freezer and garden furniture. A shared barbecue shelter is also in your use free of charge.

Pets are allowed, but smoking is not. Bed linen and towels can be hired for £10 per person. Final clean in the cabin can be arranged on your behalf for £35.

Location:
The cabins are located just outside the small village of Jaala, 20km from Kuusankoski, and all local amenities are just a short drive away. The cabins can be reached easily from both Helsinki (170km) and Tampere (180km) Airports. The cabins are situated 75m from the sandy beach and the very clear Karijärvi Lake, where the water is so clean, that you can drink it. The nearest neighbour is another cabin 25-50m away.

Kouvola 40km away could provide an ideal day trip destination. The town has a number of departments stores, restaurants and bars, while the children will love the Tykkimäki Amusement Park. The park is one of the largest in Finland and has over 40 rides and games, an animal farm and a reptile zoo (open daily from 21.5-14.8, then 20-21.8 and 27.8 only).

If you like walking and nature, visit the fantastic Repovesi National Park, that consists of clear lakes and rocky, wooded hills. The park is located just 40km from the village and offers a number of nature trails for leisurely walks. The high points along the trails offer lovely views over the park and you might even spot a moose, lynx, pine marten or an otter, that inhabit the park in addition to many different types of birds.

The nearest ski resort is Mielakka 40km away. This small resort has 5 ski slopes for downhill skiing, 5 ski lifts, a halfpipe for snowboarders, tobogganing hills, tube hills (where you slide down on giant inflatable rings) and 2km of cross-country skiing tracks. The resort has a ski school and all ski equipment can be hired from the resort's own rental shop. All children, who are under 7 years old and wear a helmet, ski for free!
